A New Kind Of Paving
With the recent announcement by the Government that from Wednesday 1st October 2008 the permitted development rights for domestic front gardens has been changed.
The Government has announced
“Planning permission is now required to lay traditional impermeable driveways that allow uncontrolled run off of rainwater from front gardens onto roads, because this can contribute to flooding and pollution of watercourses.”

Guidance on permeable paving to front gardens
- You will not require planning permission if a new driveway or parking area is constructed using a permeable block paving product such as Marshalls Priora, Marshalls Tegula Priora or Marshalls Grassguard.
- You will not require planning permission if the rain water is able to run off and soak into the ground through soft landscaping such as grass or border planting.
- You will not require planning permission if the hard surfaces are less than 5 square metres in area.
- Elsewhere around your house there are no restrictions on the area of land you can cover with hard surfaces at, or near, ground level.
